I went to change my passenger axle yesterday, and my locking-nut key shredded itself inside the lug nut...before it was loosend....I have one on each tire.... I've tried the hammer/socket routine, but the locking nuts are made of hardened steel....the socket wasn't.... I bought some removers from pep-boys, but one was too small for the lug-nut, and the other was too big to fit in the recess.... So, before I take it to a shop and cross my fingers that they can get it off, does anyone have any other suggestions??
The hardened steel is gonna make it a bitch. You are probably gonna need carbide tools but you could try and drill and tap a hole then run a bolt with 2 nuts on it.
Jeff...here's some responses from random various forums I "Googled" with your issue: Snap on makes a tool just for that. its a wheel lock removal kit that works for several styles of locks. atd prolly makes a cheaper knock off. check a local parts store they can get it. (not a snap onn though) http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=96296 try a 12 point socket that doesnt exactly fit over the lug then hammer it on and use ratchet with cheater bar .. Note * the socket will most definetly be destroyed.. f you can hit the lock with a hammer on opposite sides back and forth the twist off with vise grips this has never failed me.
Discount Tire on Broadway took a set of my better halfs off when she lost the key. They are always pretty cool about taking care of you.
So....I was at a dealership today...test drove an 08 SRT-8.....the wife drove it and is now 100% on-board with the car  Problem is, they were only offering 9K on my trade in...yeah..no.:stars: So now I need to sell this thing private party to get more then that.....
Jeff...if you want to save about 15k check out this link. http://www.motortrend.com/used_cars/24/dodge/charger/srt8/index.html
Does it stick out at all? How about tack welding another lug nut onto the locking lug nut. (maybe hold a piece of cardboard or something up there so the sparks don't hit the wheel while you do it).
It's recessed about half inch. :crying: I have tomorrow off of work and my wife and child will be gone all day, so I'm going to try sears first, a tire shop second...
Ok...so, NOBODY had an extractor big enough, so I had to order a new key. It has arrived today....So, I'm off to hopefully change my axle now :thumb:
