What is the main reason for loss of birds?

I presume some go to predators, and others to accidents...and maybe a few to navigation errors...

Has there been any research to give you an indication of the percentages of the reasons for them not returning?

I'm afraid it would break my heart if I raced some and a few didn't return!!!

 

Especially if you accidentally raced a $20,000 breeder and it didn't come home.

I'm wondering if a bird that's sold ever accidentally gets loose and shows up at your doorstep? That would seem hilarious to me. (from the west coast...) "Harriet!! The dang pigeon got out. Warn that guy on the east coast to look for our bird in about 5 days!"

It does happen from time to time, but only somewhat local birds would make home here. Coast to coast is to far for a out of shape bird to make it. It would probably die trying.

 

Yes Prof, it hurts real bad to lose a good bird. Some days loses are higher than others. There are just to many varibles out there. I've had days where all of them come home and others where most are lost. Its mind twisting I tell ya. There are lots of people and schools that have been doing research trying to find out why pigeons home. Some think its the magnetic fields of the earth. Some believe its the smell of there home. Some think its the position of the sun. I think its a little of all of them. When there a sun flare ups the birds have a harder time homing. Days with extream static on FM radio stations is another bad day for homing. Weather is always a concern. We don't like to fly them in storms.

This raises a question for me. Would it not be in your best interests to see if cloning some of your top notch pedigrees is feasible? Surely there is some 3rd world nation that could hook this up for cheap. I'm serious. lol
